7 Attention-Grabbing Hooks for Reels You Can Use to Stop the Scroll

If you can’t stop the scroll, you won’t get the sale. But doing that, especially with Reels, is easier said than done.

Most strategists swear by the 2-second rule (or 2-3 seconds depending on who you ask), you have to get your audience’s attention in 2 seconds or less to stop the scroll——and I almost agree.

However, I’m not an Instagram strategist. I don’t have the data to confirm or deny a “2-second rule,” as a sales copywriter with 8+ years of experience, I can say you 100% need to be capturing your audience’s attention and doing it fast if you want socials to play a role in your customer journey.

Ready to get started? Here are some attention-grabbing hooks for Reels you can use to stop the scroll (and why they work)

5+ Attention-Grabbing Hook Templates for Reels That Stop the Scroll

A good hook is the difference between your audience getting “hooked” on your content (and finishing the video) and scrolling to the next thing.

(Attention is the first element of the Reveal Brain-Based Buying Framework©, and the first step in making sales on ANY platform)

These Instagram Reel hooks are best when customized to your business, your voice, your offers. Don’t just copy and paste what sounds good, really put effort into adapting it to your audience.

Steal my attention-grabbing hooks:

“You ever notice how [specific behavior or thought] feels way harder than it should?”

Example: “You ever notice how selling your own offer feels harder than selling someone else’s?”

This hook thrives thanks to creating recognition—your brain (and your audience’s brain) prioritizes what feels familiar because familiarity signals safety. By mirroring a thought or experience they’ve had, you “recognize” them and they “recognize” you, making your content immediately relevant (and stopping the scroll!).

“The [mundane or soft thing] that taught me more about [serious or strategic topic] than anything else.”

Example: “The grocery store line that taught me more about buyer psychology than my business degree.”

Contrast disrupts the brain’s prediction patterns (pattern interruption). The surprise or seemingly random pairing creates a small dopamine spike that reopens the attention channel. And because contrast demands meaning-making, it naturally activates curiosity and memory—both of which are incredible tools for sales.

“When you [simple action], [clear, desired result]”

Example: “When you write how you speak, people actually listen.”

Not every scroll-stopper needs to be something elaborate. Simple, fluent phrasing (think predictable structure, familiar words, and a balanced rhythm) is processed faster, which makes the brain believe it faster.

P.S. This quick hook uses three levers of the Reveal Brain-Based Buying Framework©, attention, ease, and clarity! Learn more about the levers and how to use them in This is How You Sell: The Textbook!

“Something wild happened when I finally stopped [common behavior]”

Example: “Something wild happened when I stopped planning my content in advance.”

This is called opening the curiosity gap. It’s when you open a loop without immediately closing it, triggering information tensions—or the need to know what happens next. Their brain will “hold” that tension until it’s resolved. And the only way to resolve it? Keep watching your Reel.

“Before you [daily action], remember this]”

Example: “Before you hit send on your next email, remember: they signed up to hear from you, you don’t have to overthink it.”

Anchoring a lesson to time activates what’s known as temporal salience. It’s almost like habit-stacking in the sense that it signals immediacy and tells their brain “this matters now” or “this matters when X.”

“If you’ve ever [shared thought or behavior], this one’s for you.”

Example: “If you’ve ever gone weeks without an inquiry, this one’s for you.”

When we “see ourselves” in something, our brain tells us “that’s safe” and “that’s for us.” And when we feel like something is good for us (or meant for us), we lock in and the same applies to your audience.

“If you’re [doing x] and still not [getting Y], here’s what’s probably going on.”

Example: “If you’re posting incredible content and still not getting sales, here’s what’s probably going on.”

The brain flags personally relevant problems as important (AKA they stand out or are more “salient”) because they threaten current goals. By naming a mismatch between the effort and the outcome, you make the message feel urgent and directly applicable to your audience—getting the attention of your Instagram viewers.

These Hooks Aren’t Limited to Reels, You Can Also Use Them…

Literally anywhere, just change the format. The reason these reel templates work isn’t because I wrote them (although that helps 😉), it’s because they’re based on sales psychology, the reason behind why people buy.

You can take these reel hooks and turn them into email subject lines, threads, or even the first page of your carousel—and they’ll still work to grab your audience’s attention.

How to Get Better at Selling—Not Just Grabbing Attention

Today’s goal was grabbing your audience’s attention—but attention is just the first lever to pull in sales. If you truly want to get better at selling, you also have to create clarity, ease, connection, and desire.

You have to make working with, buying from, or simply subscribing to your newsletter a no-brainer for your audience.
