Conversion Copywriting 101: Turn More Website Visitors into Paying Clients

If you’ve been hanging out in the business space for any length of time, you’ve probably started to see the word “conversion” tacked onto copywriting whenever the topic comes up.

Conversion-focused copywriting is, to put it simply, copy (aka words) that convert readers.

A conversion happens when someone reads your copy and takes a desired action, such as joining your email list, inquiring to work together, or buying from you.

Is Conversion-Focused Copy the Same as Web Copy?

Web copy can (and I’d argue should, which we’ll get into in a minute) be conversion copy, but not ALL conversion copy = web copy.

Conversion copy is strategically crafted in a way that persuades the reader and creates a clear path to action.

But the actual format of conversion copy can take many forms—like pages on your website, social media posts, sales emails, newsletters, etc.

Web copy, on the other hand, is just the words that make up a website (everything from your core site pages to landing pages and sales pages). That’s the most basic definition, but as a website copywriter, I believe that web copy should do more than just sound good—it also needs to work.

The job of a strong website is to convert visitors into paying clients, which means conversion-focused copywriting is absolutely a necessity.

What Makes Copy Convert?

So, what makes copy “conversion-focused copywriting” versus just being good copy?

Good copy may sound nice on the surface, look beautiful on the page, and cover all the must-know features of your offer, but none of that really matters if it doesn’t make your visitors feel anything.

Conversion copy works by tapping into sales psychology—consumer behavior, emotions, and cognitive processes that influence client buying decisions.

Copy that converts addresses objections and builds trust and confidence in your offer without coercing or bullying them to invest in what you’re selling. Every single word works strategically to move them closer to saying “yes” to your offer.

Let’s look at what this actually looks like in practice:

How Sales Psychology Influences Conversions

If your audience isn’t converting into paying clients, there’s likely a gap in your marketing that’s making it less effective.

At Reveal, I utilize the Brain-Based Buying Framework© consisting of five “levers” of sales psychology.

You can apply these same levers when it comes to copy specifically:

  1. Attention: Before you can convert anyone, you first have to get eyes on your offer. That means your hooks and above-the-fold copy need to be strong enough to stop the scroll and encourage people to keep reading.
  2. Connection: High-converting copy isn’t vague. If your words aren’t personal or specific enough to the problems and struggles of the person you’re trying to reach, they’re not going to feel connected enough to buy.
  3. Desire: Someone can like what you’re saying, but still not feel compelled to buy your offer if it doesn’t feel urgent for them. This lever builds emotional momentum by sharing outcomes and transformations so they want it right now.
  4. Clarity: Clear copy that tells someone exactly what’s included in your offer, how much it costs, and what to expect when they click “buy” cannot be overlooked. If your audience is confused about any of these things, it opens up doubt and hurts trust… and you might lose the sale.
  5. Ease: Ease in your copy removes fear and resistance in your audience’s brain and replaces it with simplicity and confidence. The decision should feel simple, with as few obstacles or overwhelming steps as possible.

If you consistently pull each of the levers in your copy, you’ll make conversions.

Do You Need to Hire a Copywriter for Conversion Copy?

You don’t have to hire a professional copywriter for conversion-focused copywriting.

BUT you’ll likely see even higher conversions than if you were to do it on your own, because they’ve honed their knowledge and skills over years of experience and have firsthand knowledge of what makes copy work.

And sometimes, the copy on its own isn’t the only problem. Other gaps in your funnel, levers not being pulled on your website, could be losing your audience before the sale without you even realizing it—but a professional copywriter will.

Which is why you should partner up with an experienced copywriter who knows sales psychology inside and out. 😉

When you’re ready, here’s how we can work together to write conversion-focused copy that works for your business.
