3 Habits That Make Me a Successful Copywriter (That Have Nothing to Do With Copywriting)

While there are tons of things I love to do to keep my copywriting skills sharp (you should always be learning and improving), there’s also a lot that goes on behind the scenes that has helped me become (and continue to be) the successful copywriter I am today.

These little habits are ingrained into how I run my business — and now I get to share them with you!

The Habits That Make Me a Successful Copywriter

Building a successful copywriting business and becoming a successful copywriter weren’t exclusively the results of my copywriting skills (although I am a damn good copywriter) — they’re the results of the habits I’ve created over the years of entrepreneurship, setting boundaries, and discovering what works for me (so it might look the same for you).

Some of these habits even tie into Reveal’s core values (as they should). Creating healthy habits in your business—both around your skill development and not — is key to keeping the balance between your needs and wants and essentially living the lifestyle you dreamed of when you started it all.

Here are three habits that have nothing to do with copywriting that make me a successful copywriter:

#1. Spending Time on Myself

You’ll see this everywhere, but I promise it works. You cannot be a successful business owner (or copywriter, in this case) without dedicating some time to what you want to do — what brings you joy, peace, and relaxation.

For me, this looks like journaling, playing soccer, blowing glass (I had to try it at least once, right?), and spending time with my besties — preferably talking about something other than business. Although, a good business bestie chat feels good too.

#2. Connecting With My Community

Never discredit the value of spending time with and connecting with your community virtually and locally. I’ve loved meeting people in my community online — some of my closest friends are those I know in business and connect with in person.

But it’s not just making friends; it’s getting to know your community as a whole, which makes entrepreneurship and being a business owner a little less lonely and isolated. I will always find time for it, even in the busiest seasons.

#3. Being Honest and Transparent

Transparency is one of Reveal’s core values, and honesty is right there with it. I bring transparency to everything we do—launches, products, experiences, everything. But I also embrace transparency and honesty when it comes to myself and running my business.

I always try to be transparent and honest with myself about my wants, needs, and goals. I think about my non-negotiables and what it would look like to do this vs. that or if I’m even comfortable doing it. I’m realistic about my processes in creating and honest about my results (especially in recognizing what I did well — and what I could do better).

Being a Business Owner is More Than Owning a Business

As small business owners, we are so closely tied to our businesses that it’s hard to realize that we are not defined by our businesses — but the way we treat ourselves can affect our businesses.

When you’re having a hard time, so is your business. When you’re not loving what you do, it shows in your content and work.

It’s more than your skillset, it’s more than your industry, it’s all about you, and you have to be considerate of yourself and what you want/need to be successful.

Helping business owners tap into the powers of sales, psychology, and storytelling to reach their ideal audience, sell their services & products, and increase their impact is sort of my favorite thing.

I've been fascinated by stories and how they connect us since I was really young, inspiring me to earn a journalism degree before spending time in the magazine world and ultimately founding Reveal. My goal is simple: Help you reveal (get it?) your truth and everything that makes you a 10/10 brand in a way that helps people find you, choose you, love you, and pay you.

This blog is full of my best tips, tricks, and advice. Thanks for stopping by — hope to see you back again here soon
