There’s so much confusion around copywriting and copywriters; it’s not even funny. You always hear of us when it’s almost too late—right before your big launch, as you’re mid-way through your funnels, or even as your designer is adding the final touches to your site (although they should have sent you to a copywriter sooner, we’ll save that for another day).

The goal today is to allow you to walk, or rather, scroll away with a better understanding of when to hire a copywriter—and, more specifically, when to hire a copywriter for your website.

When to Hire a Copywriter for Your Website

If you’re looking for a more specific, timeline-based answer, I recommend looking for a copywriter 12 weeks before you want your website to go live. This gives your copywriter plenty of time to write some really f*cking good copy while giving your designer plenty of time to do what they do best—design.

You don’t have to wait for a new website launch or redesign to hire a copywriter. You can hire a copywriter at any point in business, just whenever it feels ‘right.’

But, if you’re asking on a deeper level, like an “I don’t know if I really need a copywriter” level, I’d say it’s time to hire  if—

Your Website Drives Tons of Traffic, But You’re Not Converting

And, if you’re being honest with yourself, you don’t love how you sound. Maybe you tried to DIY or follow a template, but whatever it was didn’t work out as planned. Now, it might look good, but it doesn’t sound great.

Look at their testimonials and case studies to see who they’ve worked with in the past and what their clients experienced—and if their experience is what you’re looking for.

If you’re working with a designer, you can ask for recommendations; they likely have a copywriter (or a few) they often work with on projects like yours.
